In June I made what is becoming an annual tradition of going to the Roan Highlands and hiking during the Catawba rhododendron bloom , just as the rhododendrons were hitting their peak. I returned to the Carvers Gap, Roan Mountain area a number of times over the 2 weeks for the rhododendrons and flame azaleas. The day would start out clear, but by afternoon the mountain's microclimates brought storms, during which I would take cover and watch the mist and clouds drifting off the mountains. I am fascinated by these high mountain weather makers. In this painting, I wanted to reflect that feeling I get when sitting there watching the fog and mist.
